LUGOD on the radio this week

Members of LUGOD will be on two radio shows this week, to talk about Linux and open source, the club, and our 11th anniversary meeting next Monday. On Wednesday, some time between 5 and 6pm, Bill Kendrick will be on Dr. Andy's Poetry & Technology Hour on KDVS (90.3FM in Davis). And on Friday, some time between 10 and 11am, Bill Kendrick and Margo Schulter will be on Insight on Capital Public Radio's KXJZ (90.9FM in Sacramento).

Kicking off 2010!

LUGOD had a great social gathering at Crepeville restaurant this evening, with over a dozen different people showing up over the span of 2 and a half hours (and 1/4th of them were newcomers). Our next event will be our 11th anniversary meeting at the Veterans' Memorial Center. Join us for free food, give-aways, raffle prizes, and a presentation from LifeRay, Inc.!

Elections held

All nominees ran unopposed, so at last night's meeting we called for any objections to the nominees being elected as officers. There were no objections, so officers take their positions immediately: root: Bill Kendrick, sys: Brian Lavender, typescript: Andrew Roach, /dev/null: Greg FitzGerald.

LUGOD is holding a social gathering tomorrow evening (November 3rd, 7pm) at Crepeville. At month's general meeting (Monday, November 16th), REvolution Computing will be here to tell us about the R statistical programming language, and their optimized R product, "REvolution R". Also, officer elections take place. You have until then to e-mail your nomination to our secretary.

Opportunity to advertise on Unitrans

LUGOD can place 15"x11" ads on all ~40 Unitrans single-decker busses (between Sept. and June) for $455. We got quotes from FedEx Office and Copyland in Davis, and the latter can produce them (color copies on card stock, trimmed, and laminated) for less than $100. We have less than a week to respond to Unitrans.

Possibility for meetings at Explorit

LUGOD met with the Explorit Science Center today, to talk about the possibility of using one of their locations (on 2nd and 5th Streets) for LUGOD meetings, while the Davis Branch of the Yolo County Library is undergoing renovation. In the meantime, we still need a venue for our July meeting.

Plans underway for a multi-LUG booth at OSCON

OSCON 2009, O'Reilly's Open Source Convention, will take place in San Jose this July. Members from various local and Bay Area LUGs have shown interest in putting together a multi-LUG booth (a "dot org" booth), like we've done at LinuxWorld Expo in the past.

We've put up a page for organizing a LUG booth at OSCON. If you'd like to help, contact Bill Kendrick, or subscribe and post a note to LUGOD's 'vox-outreach' mailing list.

The Davis branch of the Yolo County Library will be undergoing renovation for the next ~12 months. Therefore, LUGOD is in need of a new venue, beginning with our June 15th meeting. Installfest on May 30th!

Thanks to help from Sebastian Ng at the Computer Science Club at UC Davis, LUGOD will be holding a Linux Installfest Workshop on Saturday, May 30th (10am-4pm) in Room 1003 in the Kemper Hall building at UC Davis. Please RSVP ahead of time if you'd like to get help installing or configuring Linux on your system. Post a note to our 'vox-if' mailing list if you'd like to help volunteer. The topic of the IF will be "What version of Linux should I install?"

New meeting location needed, beginning in June!

The Davis branch of the Yolo County Library will be undergoing renovation, possibly as early as June, and lasting about 1 year. LUGOD typically holds its general meetings (on the third Monday of each month) in the Blanchard meeting room of the Davis library, so we will need a new venue.
