Very lucid explanation, Bill.  I assume you're using Mailman's "invite"
function?  I wish more Mailman listadmins were aware of and used it, as
it helps aspiring subscribers while still following mailing-list best
practices of validating the subscription address and ensuring that the
subscriber specifically wishes to join.
