Hello Thomas;
I would have to second, third and fourth the opinions of the others. the 2.0
kernel is extremely outdated. That said do what you want in regards to
installing Red Hat. They are at version 7.2 (Uses the 2.4.X kernel). Or wait
a couple of weeks and the newer Red Hat 7.3 will be out. Considering the age
of the box you are using (a 486) I would stick with Red Hat, Debian, or
Slackware. Of the three I would personally go with Debian for a multitude of
reasons I will not get into now (mostly it plays nice with older equipment
and is better supported by LUGOD as a whole).
If you would like to come out to the next InstallFest (RSVP at
http://www.lugod.org/if ) we can install Linux for you, but if this is a task
you are wanting to tackle on your own (and I don't see any reason not too)
then I would read the instructions for installing the distro of your choice.
Several wonderful books are out including many that come with Linux Distro.
Red Hat Unleashed for Red Hat 7.2 was mentioned. AVOID Mandrake it is not
going to work on a 486 it is optimized for Pentium systems. In regards to
Debian go to http://www.Debian.org and start reading you can install the
system with a few floppies and a decent network connection. Good luck and let
us know what other questions you have.
