Why we are staffing in this group:

This is a new group that will be dedicated to Linux kernel
engineering.  The  people filling these roles will help Vmware make
Linux a better guest and host operating system for virtualization in
general and VMware products in particular through a wide range of
projects, covering the areas of networking, file systems,
installation, configuration, deployment, package management, Linux
kernel internals, including memory management, resource management,
and interrupt architecture.

General Responsibilities:

- Represent VMware as maintainer for code submitted to Linux
distributions and upstream repositories.

- Work with partners and Linux distributions to get functionality and
fixes included in Linux distributions and upstream repositories

- Work with cross functional teams within VMware to bring new
virtualization functionality to Linux.

- Analyze and resolve OS problems encountered during virtualization

- Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations

- Develop virtualization related features and functionality in the
Linux kernel

- Track Linux kernel development and assess impact on Linux Virtual Machines

- Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations



The Ideal Candidates:  (not all of this in one person)

3 to 12 + years of industry experience.

Is highly talented and highly-motivated individuals to work on Linux
system development as part of this core technology group, which is
responsible for the virtual hardware platform (CPU virtualization,
device emulation, guest drivers, etc.) in VMware products.

Has the ability to rapidly understand and internalize different Linux
sub-systems.

Has experience working on Linux kernel internals, including memory
management, resource management, and interrupt architecture and other
different Linux OS subsystems including networking, file systems,
installation, configuration, package management.

Has made significant contributions to the Linux/OSS community having a
proven track record with large Linux development projects.

Strong software engineering background with a passion for delivering
quality software.

Excellent hands-on implementer with strong C programming skills.

Knowledge of x86 assembly/architecture.
