Ah... Okay.  I've done this... kinda... Once, back in college.
A friend and I were learning X-Window programming for his senior project.
(I wasn't quite a senior yet.)

We eventually came up with a multiplayer game (taking advantage of the way
X handles that whole servers<->client thing) where you flew around in space
shooting at each other and trying to avoid asteroids. :^)

I pretty much went straight from there, to where I am now. :^)
