Hi Pete,

First, I'm new to the list.  I graduated from an out-of-state college and
am back in the Bay Area (Vallejo) trying to pay off student loans.

I, too, am job hunting and I'm in the same boat you're in.  I have a huge
interest in building Linux systems, like unified logins, roaming homedirs,
etc to a mixed environment with a Linux backend.  I also love web
programming (as opposed to web design).  I feel like I would be very happy
in a job where I could do these two, and I'm looking at networking (Cisco,
et al).  A hiring manager told me my resume looked very good, but he'd
like to see the RHCE certification and a year of enterprise Linux system
administration experience.  From where I'm at, it'd be perfect to have a
year of 'enterprise' experience.  It'd mean I'd have a job right now!

About the resume specifically, I've heard a lot of different responses. 
One is to chuck the old-fashioned resume idea and go with a resume that
states how you can do the job at hand (check
http://www.askaheadhunter.com).  Another workshop I went to said keep the
old-fashioned one but highlight your skills by listing accomplishments.

Okay, maybe I'm rambling... I guess the point is keep at it.  I've been
looking since April, had several interviews, but eventually the hard luck
sets in.  But keep looking looking and looking.  Don't underestimate the
people your friends and family know, too.  They might know someone who
knows someone, who knows someone who has the programming or sysadmin job
you want!  The hard part is finding out about these links.
