2002.11.18 Meeting Notes

News

  • Intel and MontaVista team up.

  • SacLUG's December 12th meeting will showcase how the Sacramento SPCA's servers were built.

Project Reports

  • Demo - No demo ended up happening this past Saturday (November 16th). No word on whether one will be scheduled for December yet. A Mac clone ("Power Computing") was salvaged for LUGOD, to be used during demos (since "does Linux run on Mac?" gets asked a lot). We still need an ADB keyboard cable, and ADB mouse.

  • Installfests - The last Installfest was yesterday, November 17th. 14 people signed up, but only 6 showed. Everyone seemed happy. (Also, apparently a full demo version of Partition Magic is available from their website, which may be useful to Installfests.)

  • LERT - No known recent LERT calls.

  • Library - No known recent Library activity.

  • Linux Class - 21 people attended. Rod Roark, Richard Harke, Rusty Minden and Bill Alexander talked about TCP/IP, Apache, e-mail clients and servers, and more.

Other Business

  • Officer Nominations - Nominations for officer positions have closed. Bill Kendrick and Rusty Minden were nominated for 'root' (president). Mike Simons (current 'sys') and Rusty Minden were nominated for 'sys' (vice president). Stephen Helms was nominated for 'typescript' (secretary). Henry House (current '/dev/null') was nominated for '/dev/null' (treasurer). Voting will begin within the next day or two, and be done online. Each LUGOD member will receive a password via e-mail which they can use to vote online.

  • Public Kiosk and Newsbeat - No updates to report.

  • Raffle - Parallax brought nearly twice as much in give-aways as they originally promised - four BASIC Stamp 2 Starter Kits - which we raffled. The lucky winners were Jeff DeFay, Cordell Newmiller, Leo, and Stephen Helms. Bruce Wolk won a t-shirt.

  • Financial Report - $??.?? in voluntary dues were collected. $15.00 was spent on the room at the library.

Presentation

  • Ken Gracey and Andy Lindsey were joined by over a half-dozen BASIC Stamp-based robots. They talked about programming BASIC Stamps, the growing Linux support for them, and they demonstrated various robots created with them - a number of 'Boe-Bots', a 'Toddler' and a remote-control plane with a BASIC Stamp installed.
