I am a self-taught SysAdmin, and I work primarily with OSS...

while they get up to speed.  On the other hand, people who have 
experience with a non-OSS unix like Solaris are usually immediately 
useful.

I would argue that the problem is not a lack of education about OSS, the 
problem is a lack of education about UNIX.

Teach them UNIX... Preferably more than one variant.  If you want to go 
advanced, teach them C.  Have them write simple patches to modify the 
behavior of OSS software.



(the real problem with most graduates, of course, is lack of general 
intelligence.  No amount of education can make up for being only slightly 
above average.  These people need to be vetted early, and sent into 
marking or something.)
