Oh, I didn't say better, now did I...? ;-) I think for someone who wants to
learn linux with no fuss, no hassles, and pretty much no working knowledge
of anything linux related,... SuSE is great (and probably distros like
redhat, mandrake, etc. are too - but I've never touched those though). SuSE
9.0 worked straight out of the box, recognized all hardware, installed
everything flawlessly, with virtually no input whatsoever from the user. It
was as effortless as effortless gets...
... Gentoo, on the other hand, sheesh!!! It took about two weeks to install
it. ;-) I did choose the compile everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) yourself
route, i.e. bootstrap and all: it is download-intensive,
processor-intensive, time-intensive and very user-input-intensive!!! But
that's what I love about it. EVERYTHING IS CONFIGURABLE! The power of
"emerge" and the versatility of USE flags is awesome! Not to mention if you
go through this process just once, you will pretty much have FULL knowledge
of your system.
Part of the reason it took me so long to get it up and running was mainly
starting from stage1 and bootstrapping and tons of strange little bugs, plus
that step is super sensitive to the compiler flags - and I was really
pushing the limits of optimization. I did find it interesting that several
times when I encountered some little package here or there that wouldn't
compile (due to source errors) that typically a solution/fix/patch of some
kind would show up on bugs.gentoo.org within hours or maybe a day or two.
Gentoo users/developers are VERY active! ;-)
