Kudos to trying to fix this yourself.

There used to be a super electronics store in Sacramento called Marvac but 
they closed.  Real shame.  There is also one in downtown Sacramento called 
Metro Electronics.  Maybe you can go into the store and show them what you 
need.

Maybe you can hook up with an electronics teacher at a university or a jr. 
college?  American river college has a good program out there.

I have been seriously thinking about taking an electronics class to help my 
career (mechanic).  It is amazing what electronics are morphing into on 
these newer vehicles.
