[vox-tech] mplayer color problem

hi all,

a few weeks ago, (probably after an aptitude upgrade) mplayer started to
display desaturated, washed out colors.  people look like ghosts.  it's
nearly black and white.

same thing happens with gxine and gtv, so it's a general video problem.
static images (jpg, pdf, etc) look fine.

i'm kind of stumped.  any ideas on how to fix the colors?
