<snipped everything, including my original reply>

I reduced the loglevel to "debug", which reduced the clutter enough
for me to spot this:

E [17/Oct/2005:11:37:13 -0700] PID 1133 stopped with status 2!
D [17/Oct/2005:11:37:13 -0700] [Job 1]
/usr/local/libexec/cups/filter/foomatic-rip: No such file or directory
D [17/Oct/2005:11:37:13 -0700] [Job 1] Page = 612x792; 18,36 to
594,783
D [17/Oct/2005:11:37:13 -0700] [Job 1] slowcollate=0, slowduplex=0,
sloworder=0

Turns out I only needed one more thing: to install
/usr/ports/printer/foomatic-filters. Once I did that it just started
working. Works just as well via the JetDirect interface as USB.

As usual it turns out to be somethink comletely simple-stupid.

Thanks for your help!
