Alternative explanation: The message they are sending to management is "M$
is interoperable with M$, and those free products are not interoperable,
so we have to break the data back down to the simplest possible form. See
how hard it is to work with Free Software? You get what you pay for!"

For day-to-day work, there can be some glitches in this kind of
arrangement that require MySQL-specific familiarity... but you are right
that anyone should be able to fathom that this is a better way to
implement a data migration.
