With a Linksys router, you can turn off SSID broadcast from the set-up menu on older firmware and in the wireless setup menu on newer firmware. Doesn't affect our laptop log-ins...but we're using MAC filtering (mostly William's laptop) and perhaps that allows the connection to proceed even with the SSID broadcast off.
