Turned out that the BIOS had it set to "Disabled", (though it still 
worked under XP.. go figure)  When I enable it, it works fine as 
/dev/ttyS0 (though it's still COM2 under XP strangely).

Thanks to everybody to helping and putting up with my cranky rantings,
