I finally fixed my crashing problem.  Using my wireless card seemed to
make the crashes occur, but I never clearly identified the real cause of
the problem.  The crashes happened when I was using X, so I never had a
chance to take advantage of the sysreq key.

Later I found that my kernel was built with SMP support and disabling
that seemed to fix the crashes.  Go figure.
