Does this file exist?
Does the directory "/var/lib/mysql" exist?

I got this message when I installed mysql in
a location what was not the default. The solution was
to edit the script "safe_mysqld" and set the
location of the socket file to "/tmp" using the
environment variable "MYSQL_UNIX_PORT".
