ahhh, yes.  good advice.   prolly what would've happened is i would've
looked at the output of dmesg, not seen anything (since the module
didn't load), scratched my head for a second and went for lspci.  :)

on second thought, i think the best advice is to go to:

   http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

and type the name of your laptop model followed by the word "linux",
followed by either "network" or "nic".  possibly add the word "config".

although you'll prolly learn (slightly) more going the lspci/Ethernet-HOWTO
route.
