Hmm.  That definitely didn't happen at the time potato replaced slink 
as "stable"!  I recall that basically about something like _three_
packages arrived that day, and those were pretty ho-hum stuff.

But I haven't had any systems tracking stable since shortly thereafter, 
after "testing" had been out and was obviously working.

My comments were based on my experience at the time, and I haven't seen
cause to muck about with the "stable" branch in a long while.

I'll give it maybe a week until the pissing and moaning starts to become
obnoxious, from people who lack the initiative to edit an
/etc/apt/sources.list file.

Which reminds me:  If you haven't tried it, apt-spy is very useful in
finding which are the fastest Debian mirrors from your location.  I had
a suspicion that the "linux.csua.berkeley.edu" site Peter likes wasn't
all that great (at least, from where I am), and just confirmed it.

You may find the "pinning" feature useful when grabbing packages from a
more-current branch.  Details are in http://linuxmafia.com/debian/tips .
As usual, the interesting stuff is concentrated near the end (it having 
grown chronologically).
