[vox-tech] question from a friend: cable modems in Davis?

I too have had a good experience with Omsoft. They're responsive and
adaptable. In the last ~2 years, PacBell has installed several remote
switches in the outlying areas of Davis, so DSL availability and
quality, at the physical layer, is quite good (my impression). Generally,
the closer one is to the central, or a remote, switch, the higher quality
the connection. PacBell is by far the leading access provider, but there
is at least one other option, New Edge Networks. A general advantage of
DSL over cable modems is that your access speed is fixed and known.

I'm in South Davis and I had Pacific Bell DSL and Internet service in my
location for a while. The "founding" roommate left and decided to take the
DSL with her, so I had to find, in effect, "new" service. Even though our
PacBell DSL was working fine, they wouldn't give us service--since starting
our service they had changed the rules on the maximum distance to a switch,
and we were just over the limit (it can be very hard to get this
information). I couldn't convince anyone at PacBell to make it happen. Having
dealt with PacBell annoyances previously, with my ISDN service, I decided it
was time to explore alternatives.Long story short, Omsoft had the power to
make it happen for me. Now, there are remote switches in many places in Davis
and it's much easier to get service.

I see Omsoft has a pretty good rebate offer on External ADSL Ethernet Modems
for new service (PacBell provides the line access). If one is planning to
connect a Linux box to the DSL, it's much easier to deal with an external
Ethernet connection. Also, if one is planning to connect the DSL modem to a
DSL router/firewall, you'll want an external Ethernet modem. Of course, read
the fine print. Brand does matter--do some research. Oh another bonus about
Omsoft is you'll get a static IP.
shawn.
