Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development
institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a
multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research.  Our Physics
Department's RHIC/ATLAS Computing Facility has a full time opportunity
for a Linux System Administrator.

The RHIC/ATLAS Computing Facility (RACF) operates a large-scale
multi-purpose computing facility 24x7, serving a geographically
diverse, worldwide scientific community that participates in various
projects in which BNL is involved. The major components of the RACF
are the 6300-processor Linux Farm, the 3 PB disk storage system, the 7
PB robotic tape storage facility, and the high-availability general
computing infrastructure. The systems are connected together by a
high-speed, 20 GBps-capable network infrastructure with over 3500
active ports.

Responsibilities include:

* Managing the Condor-based batch software.
* Participating in daily operations of the RACF Linux Farm.
* Carrying out hardware/software installation & upgrades.
* Participating in the evaluation of new technologies.
* Contributing to the support of general services in the facility.

Requirements include:

* Bachelors degree with 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in
  computer science or related discipline.

* Prior experience with x86-based systems and kernel-level knowledge
  of RedHat Linux operating systems are required.

* Working knowledge of shell scripting, Perl/Python and familiarity
  with the I/O characteristics of Linux-based systems, virtualization
  (vmware or xen) software, web-based languages and MySQL is essential.

* Basic knowledge of open-source batch system (condor, sge, pbs, etc)
  software and prior exposure to large Linux-based cluster is desirable.

* Ability to work in a team-like environment is essential.
