Hi Henry,

I found your name on LUGOD's home page and hope you don't mind my contacting
you out of the blue. I'm a recruiter for the Google.com Engineering
Leadership Group at Google. My team, the Site Reliability engineering team,
is the most visible, mission-critical, and challenging group at Google
because we're responsible for the infrastructure supporting Google.com from
start to finish, including all of our user-facing (revenue-generating)
services.

I wanted to see if any LUGOD members may be interested in engineering
(leadership or individual contributor) opportunities with Google. We are
seeking talented folks that have current expertise in coding, algorithms,
and UNIX/Linux networking to join our rapidly growing organization.
Someone with a background in hands-on production/operations management in SW
lifecycle or systems would be ideal.

We have leadership positions open in the US in Mountain View (CA), Santa
Monica (CA), as well as Dublin (Ireland) and Bangalore (India). Individual
contributor positions are available in more locations including Kirkland,
WA, New York, and Zurich. We could relocate to any location of choice. I
am enclosing job descriptions of a few of our positions.

If you feel that any of these positions is something that may be of interest
LUGOD members, please ask them to send me an email so we can schedule a time
to talk for half an hour or so. Please also feel free to send out my
contact information to friends and colleagues who may be interested.

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Engineering Manager/Director, Google.com - Mountain View

Position available in Mountain View, CA.

We're looking for a highly technical, hands-on Engineering or Operations Manager to lead a team of 4-10+ Google software engineers and systems administrators for the Google.com group. The Google.com teams are directly responsible for Google's stellar uptime record, and act as the guardians and custodians of Google's user-visible services. In this leadership role, you will be responsible for ensuring that Google users can always reach and use all of the services under your team's care.

Requirements:

    * Very high technical competence and strong academic record.
    * 3-10+ years of relevant experience managing software development and/or operations teams.
    * 4+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience, and a record of individual technical achievement.
    * Deep understanding of networking; understanding of how to isolate, diagnose, and resolve service delivery components (service delivery components include servers, networks, and applications); be familiar with the functionality, operating, and failure modes of key networking devices (routers, switches, bridges, firewalls, hardware load balancers); be able to identify networking as the potential cause of a service issue using server-resident tools to generate this data (tcpdump, ping, traceroute, etc.); familiarity in interpreting the output of these tools; familiarity with common network topologies, protocols, and tools; have some notion of common network security exploits -- and their remedies; understanding of troubleshooting at the packet level.
    * Skilled in leading projects, especially in deploying live end-user systems.
    * That rare mix of intelligence, integrity, domain knowledge, verbal agility, and diplomacy which allows you to rapidly earn the trust of technically-astute teams across the company.
    * BA/BS in Computer Science preferred; MS/PhD a plus.

Software Engineer, Google.com - Mountain View

This position is available in Mountain View, CA.

Are you part ace coder, part adrenaline junkie? Do you have a knack for seeing a problem and immediately discerning the likely solution? Maybe you have been coding for years, are bored with the old design-build-review-test-ship-repeat routine, and yearn for some faster-paced challenges? Or perhaps you are a seasoned software engineer who is also a genius at jockeying networks and administering UNIX clusters.

We are looking for top-notch, thrill-seeking Software Engineers to join the Google.com Engineering team. Google.com Engineers are in the thick of everything involved with keeping Google running, from code-level troubleshooting of service anomalies to safeguarding the availability of our most popular services; from monitoring and response to building new automation infrastructure to balancing the desire for change management with the need for stability. All team members must have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, fluency in coding, good communication skills and most of all enthusiasm for tackling the complex problems of scale which are uniquely Google. We tackle challenging, novel situations every day, and work with just about every other engineering and operations team at Google in the process.

In this role you will need:

    * Expertise in coding, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.
    * Experience in a high-volume or critical production service environment.
    * Strong understanding of IP networking, including the ability to analyze network behavior, performance and application issues using standard tools like tcpdump.

Qualifications:

    * 0-15 years experience.
    * 3+ years developing web-based applications.
    * Expertise in data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis.
    * Fluency in one or more of: C, C++, Java.
    * Fluency in one of more of: Shell, PHP, Perl or Python.
    * Ability to handle periodic on-call duty, as well as out-of-band requests.
    * Solid working knowledge of UNIX, preferably Linux.
    * Tack-sharp analytical abilities.
    * A strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
    * Fluent written communication and unusual verbal agility are strong assets.
    * SQL experience a plus, MySQL a plus.
    * Experience leading short projects involving outside teams is a plus.
    * BA/BS in Computer Science, MS or PhD is preferred.
