The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD), will be holding a meeting on:

Presentation:

  GPS and Cartography

  Presented by: Dylan Beaudette

    This talk will cover Open Source software used for spatial analysis,
    cartography, and data management.  Fundamentals of these topics,
    and the software and examples will be shown.

    Some of the software that will be demonstrated includes:
      GRASS  (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System),
      PostGIS  (geographic object support for the PostgreSQL database),
      GDAL  (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library),
      QGIS  (Quantum Geographic Information System),
      Mapserver,  and
      GMT  (Generic Mapping Tools).

  About the Speaker:

    Dylan Beaudette is a graduate student working on a degree in
    soils and biogechemistry at UC Davis. He received a bachelor's of
    science degree from UC Davis in environmental resource science, with
    an emphasis on remote sensing and GIS. He is currently working on the
    development of new tools for conducting Soil Survey operations in
    rugged terrain, through the use of soil-environmental modeling. He
    enjoys using open source software in all of the data management,
    analysis, and presentation tasks associated with his research.

    When not in the lab, Dylan enjoys hiking and HobieCat sailing in the
    Sierra Nevada during the summer, and snow boarding in the winter.
