2001.05.21 Meeting Notes

News

  • Eazel shuts down. Nautilus is Open Source, so it's development should continue.
  • The movie "Shrek" was rendered with Linux systems. DreamWorks is switching from SGI to Linux!
  • Nokia announces the "Media Terminal," a Linux-based set-top device that can play games. Loki will be releasing titles for it.
  • A court ordered an IBM representative 30 hours of community service for spraypainting IBM's "Peace, Love and Linux" logos in Chicago.
  • 2600 sued for putting up a site called "fordsucks.com". Ford has been suing numerous sites that supposedly infringe on their brand names (including some wildlife-related sites with the word "jaguar" in them!!)
  • Katje Sabin of the Davis Enterprise commended our public relations!

Project Reports

  • Demo - The next Demo will be May 26th at the Davis Food Co-Op.

  • Installfests - The last Installfest was yesterday. We had 8 installees. We are looking to secure a location for IFs during the summer - Richard Lowenberg of DCN and Kevin Murikoshi of the CS Club might be able to help. We may also consider contacting Explorit.

  • LERT - Nothing to report.

  • Library - We purchased two new books, including the excellent Advanced Perl Programming.

  • Linux Primer - Pete Salzman and Henry House (among others) are creating a document for new Linux users, which LUGOD can pass out at meetings and events.

Other Business

  • Elections - No nominations were made, so no voting is necessary. Bill Kendrick remains root (President), Pete Salzman remains sys (Vice President), Jen Rutherford remains typescript (Secretary) and Rhonda Bailey remains /dev/null (Treasurer). We are considering voting only once a year or switching to "vote of non-confidence" to reduce voting-related overhead.

  • Financial Report - $44.40 in voluntary dues were collected.

  • Raffle - We gave away some prizes. Most notable was Mark Kim winning a second Ximian-Gnome plush monkey.

Presentation

  • Brian Lavender of Worldcom in Sacramento talked about the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), and demonstrated it using roaming Netscape bookmarks and preferences.

  • Pete Salzman showed the Linux game "Jagged Alliance 2", a roleplaying strategy game created by Tribsoft.

Presentation notes available
