Message-ID: <20150301230405.GA9938@sonic.net> LUGOD friends - as usual, we are in need of guest speakers and presentations! (For user groups like ours, they are a group's number one consumable item :) ) Have you worked on an interesting project? Used some new app or tool or service that you'd like to share with us? Know someone or something (project, company, etc.) that would be interested at speaking? Please let me know! We're currently wide open all year, except for May (systemd), and a few TBD dates & topics later this year (CastAR, Black Girls Code, Kyle Rankin). More info is, as always, at http://www.lugod.org/speak/ I'm going to ping Davis Makerspace to see if anyone who's active in that group would be willing to come talk about something they're working on. I know there are other groups in the area that might be good to contact, like the Sacramento Drupal Users Group, Java group, etc. If anyone has direct contact with folks in such groups, please put me in touch! Thanks! :) Your friendly neighborhood speaker coordinator, -- -bill! Probably more a political animal than the code writer I once was-- i.e. listening to KPFK then KPFA my whole adult life for one thing-- I became eager to attend the wing-ding Archive.org announced it was throwing to celebrate-- boasting many influential folks from Press Freedom, EFF, & such as guests. ("Free, just RSVP"-- I almost came on here asking for rides.) But as I noticed the more cautionary tweets which came from twitter.com/EFF about potentially awful language in the thing (of which they EXTENDED the secrecy I believe!?).. apparently the headline-determining crew there decided to stick with the "let's just try to get on Obama/Wheeler's good side until we can figure out that's in this".. well what happened was my years of watching these Wall St. Democrats caused me to realize it wouldn't be as fun at F t. It is especially advantageous for long-distance communications, because light propagates through the fiber with little attenuation compared to electrical cables. This allows long distances to be spanned with few repeaters. First developed in the 1970s, fiber-optic communication systems have revolutionized the telecommunications industry and have played a major role in the advent of the Information Age. Because of its advantages over electrical transmission, optical fibers have largely replaced copper wire communications in core networks in the developed world. Although fiber-optic systems excel in high-bandwidth applications, optical fiber has been slow to achieve its goal of fiber to the premises or to solve the last mile problem. However, as bandwidth demand increases, more and more progress towards this goal can be observed.
