Boy, I expected more "let's switch to Microsoft" jokes today
(since it's April 1st), but it seems like all there is today is
usergroup messages to forward along to the list. ;)

(I need to install Win95 on a separate partition... anyone got
a 3.5" drive I can borrow? ;) )

*** Apress April 2010 Newsletter ***

Spring is here, the weather's warming up, and technologies are
blooming everywhere. Adobe started things off with the release of
Flash Builder 4 and the Flex 4 framework, and will continue with
the much-anticipated CS5 Suite, due out on April 10th. Microsoft
is celebrating the release of both Visual Studio 2010 and
Silverlight 4 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas on April 12th. And
let's not forget the big day for Mac users and developers, April
3rd, when the long-awaited iPad is shipped. We have an array of
solid releases to match this month, including a comprehensive
guide to working with 3D in Flash, the new WPF bible, Pro WPF in
C# 2010, and an intro to iPhone game development.

Below you'll find the latest conference and user group coverage,
including a report from the SXSW Interactive Festival, as well as
the results of our Mac Fruit Cover Contest.

The Pumpkin Wins our Mac Fruit Cover Contest!

Love Apple? Love apples? How about mangosteens?

In February, we asked you to help us pick the next fruit for our
Apress book cover. Thanks for all the wonderful entries. The most
popular submission and winner is the pumpkin (which too often
gets mistaken for a vegetable!). This Fall, a pumpkin will grace
the cover of a new iPhone book - just in time for Halloween and
pumpkin picking season. And our contest winners will receive a
free copy of this book.

Conference News and Notes:

360|Flex March 7-10

There was a record turnout at the eBay Town Hall in San Jose, CA
this March for the 360|Flex conference. Apress was a proud
sponsor of this important community-driven Flex event, which year
after year proves to be the place to be for Flex developers
looking to connect with the community, learn from Adobe Engineers
and experts, get the deepest, most technical understanding of
Flex, and have fun along the way!

This year 360|Flex introduced interactive panels offering
attendees even more opportunities to generate discussion and
participate. Highlights from 360|Flex included fun videos Adobe
Flex engineers made for the conference as well as projects in
Flex 4, which was launched two weeks after 360|Flex.

2010 SXSW Interactive Festival March 12-16

The 2010 SXSW Interactive Festival took place at the Austin
Convention Center Friday, March 12th through Tuesday, March 16th.
SXSW Interactive traditionally appeals to über-geeks and digital
creatives who push the boundaries of technological change. This
year was no exception, as web developers, designers, bloggers,
wireless innovators, programmers, inventors, tech entrepreneurs,
gamers, and game developers joined forces to create an incubator
of ideas and innovation. Over five days of captivating keynote
presentations, panel sessions, book readings, Salons and Core
Conversations, the SXSW Interactive Festival provided hands-on
training as well as big-picture analysis. Panel topics covered
everything from web design, usability, and blogging to wireless
innovation and new technology business models. In addition to the
networking opportunities at the Trade Show & Exhibition and the
hands-on gaming fun at the ScreenBurn Arcade, SXSW Interactive
had an array of exciting evening events including the SXSW Web
Awards Ceremony.

Apress took part in the event with a booth on the expo floor,
displaying an eclectic selection of titles spanning from iPhone
and Mac programming to web development and design. The underlying
goal of the festival was an optimistic one: discovering new ideas
that lead us to a better future. SXSW is a great place to be
inspired by creative individuals who are doing incredible things
to make our future more exciting. We'll definitely be making the
trip back to Austin in 2011.

VS Launch April 12-14

The Visual Studio 2010 Launch will take place at the Bellagio
Hotel in Las Vegas, NV on April 12, followed by 3 days of
in-depth sessions from the best speakers in the industry. Just
announced - not only will the new VS launch, but now Silverlight 4
will launch at the show too! Apress is proud to participate by
holding a booth (#526) at the event that will now feature the
Visual Studio 2010 Launch, Silverlight 4 Launch, along with SQL
Server and ASP.NET Events. The topics will range from all the
new, great features in Visual Studio 2010 to Silverlight, WPF,
WF, WCF, Application Lifecycle Management, .NET 4.0, ASP.NET 4.0
AJAX, ASP.NET MVC, and more. There will be insightful keynotes by
Bob Muglia, President, Server and Tools Business, and Scott
Guthrie, Corporate Vice President, .NET Developer Platform, and
Apress authors like Rocky Lhotka will be attending as well. With
these launches and events all sharing one expo floor, Las Vegas
is the place to be in 2010 for Microsoft Developers!

Apress User Group Spotlight

ActionScriptHero.org User Group

ActionScriptHero.org (ASH) is an online-based Adobe User Group
that specializes in video coverage of worldwide Flash Platform
events, hosting superhero meetings and video interviews with some
of today's biggest developers. Even the baddest superhero needs
assistance from time to time, so Apress has teamed up with ASH to
bring the Adobe community the tools it needs. ASH is comprised of
300+ professionals located all over the globe and is dedicated to
sharing ideas, news, and coverage of Flash events worldwide.

GL .net User Group

GL.net is a .NET User Group based in Gloucester, UK. The group
was started a little over a year ago, and it has been a member of
the Apress User Group Program since its onset. GL.net's aim is to
integrate the local .NET community and to jam about everything
.NET. Most meetings are .NET related, but as notorious geeks,
their discussions move through other technologies as well. Jimmy
Skowronski, group leader and organizer, is currently working with
Apress author Steven Sanderson on a UK-wide MVC 2.0 event for all
interested developers.
