At the Math dept, we've been using Ubuntu, and a lot of things have
been "just working" on install. USB keys and CF/SD cards just pop
up on the desktop.
We use GNOME, though I don't think there's a reason one way or the
other for it, except it's a pain if we have to support two environments.
