Dear Bill,

KDE would like to invite you and your members to attend the inaugural
Open Source Desktop Workshops to be held October 13th and 14th, 2005 in
San Diego California. Please feel free to post this announcement on your
website or send it to your members.

Open Source Desktop Workshops are affordable educational events that
bring top-flight Open Source desktop developers together with those who
are looking to gain the skills necessary to join them. The aim of these
workshops is to extend the reach of Open Source desktop technology in
North America by helping software developers across the continent gain
the knowledge and know-how necessary to write quality software using
these technologies. Prominent, experienced developers will guide you
through the basics of software development with Open Source desktop
technologies over the course of two information packed days. Here are
some of the topics that will be covered:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Porting Windows Applications To Linux" by Scott Collins -- Scott is a
Qt evangelist and an ambassador to the Open Source community, Scott
spent many years as a core developer on Mozilla and as a member of
mozilla.org staff
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Components: DCOP and KParts/ In-Process Scripting with KJSEmbed" by Ian
Geiser (VP of SourceXtreme) -- Ian is a contributor to the Linux PPC and
KDE Projects. Ian works on a variety of KDE technologies, including
KJSEmbed and the KDevelop IDE.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Build Systems: Makefile.am's and QMake" by Matt Rogers -- Matt is one
of Kopete's lead developers after joining the project in 2003 to enhance
Kopete's support for the Yahoo! protocol. In addition to his
contributions to Kopete, Matt has also contributed code to KDevelop,
Kicker, and kdelibs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Setting Up A KDE Development Environment/ Foundations: Qt, libkdecore
and libkdeui" by Aaron Seigo -- Aaron is a full time KDE core developer,
Aaron brings his well rounded knowledge of the desktop space and
trademark energy to the workshops where he will be sharing his expertise
in usability and object oriented design and programming.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Database Development Techniques" by Adam Treat -- Adam is an eclectic
KDE programmer who enjoys hacking on KDE/Qt language bindings,
development tools, database programs, and other various assorted
goodies. Currently, Adam maintains dataKiosk, a KDE database interface
program, and Kugar the KOffice general purpose reporting tool.

PS -- The Open Source Desktop Workshops are designed specifically for
developers and programmers and won't be of much interest to
non-programmer types. The course material will assume that the attendee
has a basic level of proficiency in programming and/or software
development. If there are less technical members of your LUG who are not
programmers or who are looking to just learn more about Linux in general
we recommend that you check out the 4th Annual Desktop Linux Summit
coming in April 24 & 25, 2006 - For more info visit
