DCN has a lineup of classes this Spring, including one on Mailman
list management (they offer mailman and majordomo to local non-profits)
and one on Open Source!  See below...

Register Now for DCN's Spring 2004 Classes and Workshops

DCN, continuing in its commitment to public education about the Internet
and its community applications and services, announces its lineup of free
public classes and workshops for this Spring.   Class topics have been
chosen to provide a wide range of practical knowledge and technical
assistance for individuals just getting started, for more savvy users who
want to hone added skills, and for community organizations which need to
use the net more effectively for their daily work and to better communicate
with their constituents.      Contact DCN to register, to ask questions or
to ask DCN to arrange a special class for your organization.

All DCN classes will be held from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., at the City of Davis'
Computer Lab, 600 A Street (between City Hall and the Senior Center).
* Internet for Beginners will be at 5:30-7:00.

Effective Web Sites for Non-profits                         Thurs. April 1
This is a special class for local nonprofit environmental, healthcare, and
community service organizations, that need to make more cost-effective
technical, design and applications based decisions, for a more
strategically effective online presence.   Instuctor: David Siedband

Mailman Listserv Management                                 Thurs. April 8
This class will offer help on the management of email lists for community
groups that want to set up and facilitate multi-user email exchanges
(volunteers, project teams, membership).   DCN is offering Mailman lists to
nonprofits, as an improved alternative to our Majordomo listservs.

Internet for Beginners                       * (5:30-7:00)   Mon. April 19
This basics class is for the many people who are just starting to use
computers and the Internet; offering general information, answers to
attendee questions, and clear demo's.   Tell a friend.

SimpleSite Web Creation                                    Thurs. April 22
The DCN Web Team has developed a simple web-based application that allows
users to create web sites without any  (HTML) programming knowledge.  This
class is for representatives of community groups that may need such a free
and easy means to maintain their own web sites.

Email and Attachments Help                                   Mon. April 26
This is another in our classes for beginners and those who need a bit of
help to better understand and use their email programs; their capabilities
and intricacies.

Your Internet Privacy, Security and Hygiene                Thurs. April 29
Do you need to know what to do about spam; about Internet viruses and other
infections; about protecting your computer, your connection, your personal
privacy?    Then, this class is for you.

Internet Searching and Research                                 Mon. May 3

This beginners' class will focus on the use of the web and its search tools
for more efficient research and location of online information resources.
What are you having trouble finding?

Open Source Applications: An Overview                         Thurs. May 6

Attend this introductory class to learn more about the growing interest in
and importance of the 'open source' movement; open source software and
applications; and web-content management.
Should we start an Open Source Users Group?

Zope / Plone: Web Content Management                         Thurs. May 13
This class will focus on Zope, with its Content Management Framework (CMF),
and Plone, a content management system built on Zope CMF.  The DCN Web Team
is offering this tutorial especially for those who would like to help
develop open source web tools for Davis area organizations.

Introduction to Web Page Creation                              Mon. May 17
If you are interested in the very basics of web page creation, this
overview class is for you.   Attend to learn more about web page
construction and maintenance, for yourself or for your organization.   More
in-depth classes will be scheduled, based on expressed interest at this
class.

Wireless (WiFi) Security                                     Thurs. May 27
Wireless Internet access and systems are rapidly proliferating everywhere,
including in Davis.  Not enough attention is being paid to intrusions upon
wireless connections and means of improved security.  This workshop is a
must for anyone with, or planning to set up new wireless hotspot access
locations for home, business or neighborhoods.   A special report on the
state of wireless security in Davis will be published prior to this
workshop.

Community Calendar (for community .orgs)                     Thurs. June 3
The DCN Web Team has developed a new aggregated Community Calendar
program, that it is now offering at no cost to area nonprofits and
community organizations.   If your group needs a more easily useful web
calendar, this application and tutorial is for you.
