(I remember having to do that when we had a mailbox on the curb.)

Something else that was common was tha when you received mail in an old
fashioned mailbox  you would know based on the position of the door.

Regionally, I have seen it two ways:
1) Customer closes the bx all of the way, and the postman leaves the box
partially ajar when they deliver mail
2) Customer leaves the door to their mailbox open part way, and when mail
is delivered, the box is completely closed.

#2 seemes to be more common from my recollection.

Even though you point out the flag is for the postman, I think it is still
applicable on my box, since postmaster is aliased to me. ;-)

Ok. I fyou really want to confuse a metaphor, consider the original
Majordomo and the use of the word today. Is a mailing list/system a house?
