packaged versions do the "right thing".  without worrying about all that
nonsense.   star office must have brainstormed on the most hair-brained
method of installation.  what were they thinking?

after i finish writing my book on gdb, finish my phd, get married,
complete my move across country, fix the last few problems with the
lugod mailing lists, finish my 15 hour end-of-the-quarter grading and
successfully land a fun and high paying job i'd be more than happy to
write the FAQ.   ;)

why not just burn the rpm and deb packages?  i dunno about rpm, but i
didn't have to fiddle with any of that nonsense on debian.

yup.  been there, done that.  twice, if not thrice.

that's one of the reasons why i gave up on star office.
