We've got the most greatest and most talented set of attendees for any
group I know.  As soon as I sent out my prior e-mail telling of our
scheduled speakers medical challenge, one of our list members offered to
fill-in the gap.  Bill Jolitz will consider his thoughts on copyrights and
patents in the software arena.  Bill is the developer of 386BSD a frequent
contributor to Dr. Dobbs Journal and earlier was responsible for BSD Unix
on the PDP-11.

What:   Open Software Development in the Real World

Who:    Bill Jolitz, Entrepreneur, Creator of 386BSD, author of more than
	thirty articles published in Dr. Dobbs and Unix Magazine.

Dinner: Pizza for $4    starting at 7pm till 7:30pm.  If you're interested

He wants to discuss Intellectual Property Rights in the Open Source world.
Open software development has proven in recent years to have tremendous
reach in involving thousands of developers to coordinate thier efforts and
accomplish astounding feats. Yet at the same time, recent events have shown
that it is far from being risk free. Intellectual property rights,
undisclosed issues, unsuitable usage and political biases all have had major
impact on publically developed software. What does this mean to the future
of software development and the technology industry as a whole? Where do we
find the just and secure balence between the unfettered skills of developers
and the necessary boundaries that the industry as a whole must struggle to
work within?

William Jolitz is uniquely qualified to explore these issues. He was
responsible for 386BSD, the first open source operating system. Based on
Berkeley's Net2 release, 386BSD was never challenged when others were.
Documented as it was written in real time in a the popular Dr. Dobb's
article series and later released as a popular CDROM as well as books,
386BSD took the slow road of proving independant design from the start
precisely to avoid rights issues.
