Outside of an ideology, one of the key reasons IBM is using it is because 
it affords them some unique things:

1. operates as lubricant with their long time feud with Microsoft (quite 
possibly the biggest "quiet" fued in Silicon Valley history)

2. affords them a way to expand everything from their embeded operations 
to the visibility of their mainframe business

3. they can use it within their Global Services PS group (because services 
is arguably where the money is with OSS and IBM makes a large chunck of 
their change with Professional Services/custom engineering)
