Well, it appears I mistakenly uninstalled 
linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic.  Upon further inspection with 
the above bug report I removed linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7.4 and my 
wired ethernet returned.  I can't seem to find 
linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7.6 as mentioned in the bug report.  (By 
the way, without the module installed "wl" appeared in the proprietary 
driver list, with the diver installed "Brodcom..." proprietary driver 
was listed.)

So, I will leave well enough alone as the script that Alex suggested 
seems to be working fine recognizing the wired and wireless.
