Hi,
I get the message "Video mode not supported" it is in a box with a blue border. I haven't been in Linex for a while. I use Fedora 2.6.10-1.771_fc2 I went into 2.6.91.6_fc2 and got the same message.
My computer is a PC4 1.5 with 512 Ram.

I did have a problem finding and installing an appropriate driver for the video card, but since Kubuntu ships with the same set
as drivers as Ubuntu, it would have been an issue either way.I also have Kubuntu Dapper Flight 6 running on an ancient IBM Thinkpad with an Intel Celeron chip. That installed perfectly, with no issues at all, and runs just fine (if a bit slow).In short, I can't think of any reasons to recommend Ubuntu over Kubuntu for installation on a laptop.-- Richard S. Some people havehad bad experiences with Kubuntu, some have had bad experiences with Ubuntu,but unless there are some temporary packaging or upstream problems, eitherone should
work fine and let you install the key components of the other.It is all too common for people to encounter a problem in one or twopackages and blame the entire distro. Clearly, a problem with XWindows'support of your video or sound hardware can ruin your day... butin practically all cases this should have nothing to do with decidingbetween KDE or GNOME. For short periods of time it may have somethingto do with deciding between an on-hand older Kubuntu install disk or a newerUbuntu install disk... but such issues are transient.Some people will argue that using a lightweight WM for a laptop ispreferred, but I think KDE and GNOME are both pretty heavyweight andthat current laptop hardware should have no problem with either.Disclaimer: I have installed Kubuntu several times last year, but havenever installed Ubuntu. It seems to be about time to do some more installsthis year to see how things are coming along...--
