I've used alien to make deb packages for Sun Java, StarOffice and it's
patches and it worked fine.
Here is what I did to install StarOffice (SO is free to educational users)
1. sh so-8-ga-bin-linux-en-US_en.sh (or which ever language you choose)
2. cd /var/tmp/unpack_staroffice/RPMS ;delete the rpms you don't care
about i.e. java if you've got it already installed
3. sudo aptitude install alien
4. sudo alien *.rpm --scripts
5. sudo dpkg -i *.deb
6. cd ..
7. rm setup
8. rm -r RPMS
Cheers!
