It stands for real time clock. It's a high resolution timer.

chmod 666 it. If it's a symlink on your system make sure you chmod the file
the link points to and not the link. This is safe to do on a single user
system. Mplayer also supports not using /dev/rtc, but this uses more CPU.
See the man page, I can't recall what the option is.

Some videos do crash mplayer. Try a diffrent video output plugin (try the
-vop sdl or -vop xv option) Also try skipping ahead in the movie.
