[vox-tech] Mgetty-fax problems

I have just installed a new modem (Best Data external V92 on ttyS1 via a
plain old serial cable) and am attempting to use it to receive faxes. (This
has previously worked for me on this machine with a different modem.) The
host machine (Debian) has mgetty-fax installed and configured in
/etc/inittab to listen to /dev/ttyS1:

	s1:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS1

just as shown in the documentation. The modem answers when I send a test fax
and accepts transmission. But, the fax data just go into the void; mgetty
does not save any G3 files. The log file shows:

My initial guess is that I just have a crappy modem and should try a
different one. Does anyone have any other ideas?
