Thanks to Pete, Rod, David, Ken, Rick, and ME for what turned out to be a
pretty thorough diagnosis of a tough, yet potentially common problem with
onboard ethernet.  It's not like you can just swap those out like PCI cards.
This thread can now serve as a useful online resource for all those who are
astute and patient enough to Google it out. :-)
