I just installed debian off the 20040713 netinst on a dual xeon with 4GB ram.
It recognized all the ram when I switched to the 2.6.7-1-686-smp image.
omega:~# grep HIGHMEM /boot/config-2.6.7-1-686-smp
# CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM is not set
CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y
# CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G is not set
CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y
