Things seems to work more smoothly.  RedHat was just so clunky (though
things seems to have changed now), and it was missing so many useful
packages.  I went Mandrake because it's RedHat-compatible and it had
better system and worked smoother.  But with each release, Mandrake seems
to goof on something.  Like on my last Mandrake install (8.1), the X
server would not draw things on the screen sometimes so I had to keep
pressing ^L or move the window so it had to redraw the visual.  It was
just too cruel, and I'm embarassed to even mention I lived with that
system for years.  And it's not like I had some off-brand videocard (it
was Voodoo 3 3500TV) so Mandrake shouldn't have let that bug into the
distribution.  Well, I guess it could have been conflicting with the TV
driver modules I compiled in separately.  Even then, it didn't explain why
I was getting only 35fps with glxgears when I was using a Voodoo3.  Oh,
did I mention I had to compile the xawtv program separately because it
wasn't included with Mandrake?  Yeah, and then the window wasn't aligning
properly so I had to modify the source manually.  I did crazy stuff like
that with some other programs I wanted, too.

Anyway, all I know is things are just working on Debian.  Though I'm
forced to run some optimizations manually, I don't mind it since I know
how to set those up or figure it out (or ask it :)

So I compiled mplayer manually the other day because it apparently isn't
available on stable.  I told configure to enable anything I wanted but it
croked during compile because of missing libraries.  So as it croke, I
would install the appropriate library.  So now I got an mplayer that has
all the features I wanted enabled and it's working so perfectly now (well,
more perfect than I've ever been able to compile it).  I wouldn't have
been able to do that on RedHat or Mandrake as I would have to go library
hunting for each croke which isn't something I like doing.
