try this:
$ export NNTPSERVER=news.ucdavis.edu
$ tin -r
see if that helps. this will only "work" as long as you're coming in
on ucd's modem pool. if you're using DSL, you'll have to use a
different news server.
just to let you know, some people like a newsreader named slrn. i have
a feeling that slrn is to tin as mutt is to pine. however, it took me
almost 2 years to switch to mutt, so i have another year or so before i
need to switch over to slrn. ;)
also, some people like browser newsreaders like mozilla, but frankly,
browser anything (except for good old fashioned browsing) makes me barf.
