[vox-tech] Newbie DSL router question

i was about to post the same exact thing, but mark saved me from the
typing.  :)  this is exactly what i do.

just a few notes -- actually, my setup looks like this:

everything: CDRW, backup hardware, winex services, windows, printer, mp3
hard drives, etc, are shared via samba, X forwarding and NFS.

i use LEAF as a firewall on a PII/233.  the damned thing doesn't even
have fan; i need to look at a light on the front to see if it's on or
not.  it's the perfect situation.  and using dachstein/CD (thanks to
jeff for turning me on to it) makes me nearly worry free.  i've got
strong firewalling, and in the event that someone does break in, at
least my firewall won't need to be reinstalled, since the floppy from
which it boots and loads a / partition is write protected.

it's the ideal situation, and i've been very happy with it.

also, i've found that setting up windows to use DSL from LEAF was
remarkably easy.  almost as easy as setting up networking with a linux
machine.  just like linux, point your gateway at the router/firewall and
point your DNS at the DNS you're supposed to use.  reboot (ach!) and
voila.

fwiw, samba is easy to set up if you do the reading.  it can be a
nightmare otherwise.  the "printers under samba" diagnostic
documentation is the best i've ever seen.  very methodical diagnostic
checking.  it was well written.
