[vox-tech] another latex question -- unary vs binary minus sign

this:

$\slashed p^{\dagger} = -\slashed p$

is being printed as if the minus sign were a binary operator. roughly
(never mind the slash):

     t       t
    p  =  - p

when what i really want is a unary operation:

     t       t
    p  =   -p

of course this can be fixed with a negative space \!, but i'm wondering
if there are other ways of telling latex this isn't a binary operation.
