Yes.  Booted to the cli and everything looked OK. 
Then ran startx and it seemed good too.

I'm really reaching, but I recall starting my Win98
box at about the same time as I was running startx. 
However, both boxes are on their own UPS (APC Back-UPS
Pro) and both monitors had be on prior to turning on
either box.  So, power seems an unlikely factor.

I don't understand most of this log file, but here's a
section with a 'Failed' message.
