... to be precise, the declarations of global variables.  The global
variables themselves are also in the library, brought in with the "-lm".

   extern int myglobal;   /* declaration... exists somewhere.... */
   int myglobal;          /* allocates space for the variable,
                             normally only used in a .c file  */
