yes, set the COLUMNS and LINES variables.

no.  this is not something you can do with the shell.  this is an X
window or application level thing.

you might be able to fool tin by setting COLUMNS and LINES, but you'd
need a way to scroll.   surely the zaurius has some concept of a virtual
screen?
