Interesting. I recommend:
1. Try turning off the monitor with Fn+F5 and restarting it *after*
the screen goes weird.
2. Upgrade X.
3. Don't switch to tty in the first place.
If you go with option #3, you may want to keep yourself from switching
accidentally by modifying /etc/inittab -- modify all lines that say:
<N>:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty<N>
to:
<N>:234:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty<N>
(remove the "5"). This works only if you run runlevel 5 (ie - the laptop
goes into X automatically at boot, and you don't have to type `startx`
to go into it.)
