  If you can read any block of the drive it is possible.  I recommend
that he power off his system and do not use the drive for anything
until a replacement drive is available to extract data onto and
he is prepared to spend a few hours working on it.

  Done this recover from a failing hard drive thing three times in the
last 6 months, I wrote a report about two of them and sent to vox-tech...

  They are electronically compatible... but the size and shape of 
connector is not.  You need an adaptor and I think you have to be 
careful about orientation... I haven't fried normal ATA/IDE drives
by miss connecting, but I've heard laptop drives are killable... 

  If he doesn't want to spend the time extracting data from the drive
I would be willing to do it for him.  He would need to supply 
replacement drive and adaptor.  Depending on size of drive this 
would take about 12 hours.  Some form of compensation would be nice 
too... considering there is windows involved.
