  Okay this message is an overview of the lugod demo computer
Hardware Setup (software details in separate mail).  I was 
thinking some information about the machine should be included 
on the website.  

  Let me know if I forgot details anything of interest.

  On the website, I see a number of references to the machine in 
the meeting notes...

  Both pair of speakers and the Voodoo5 card are not part of
the bundle at the moment.  The Voodoo5 card was likely sold off
with the CRT, because this LCD panel has a funky digital connector
which would not work with standard analog video cards.  The speakers
may have simply been misplaced.

  Also, while the goal was to borrow the machine for a few days 
to setup a "stable for demo purposes" partition, the plan was to 
install the Woody release [*] and has morphed into me being
responsible for the machine.

*: Woody is currently "Debian/testing", but be finalized in May and 
   become the new "Debian/stable" replacing Potato.

* I have not opened the case so I don't know for sure that I have the
SCSI card model correct, and I am repeating simply what the i2c stuff 
is reporting telling me about a memory configuration.

  There was a suggestion that we upgrade the computer, this section is
to address that...

  The motherboard takes 100 Mhz SDRAM unbuffered ECC Registered 3.3V DIMMs,
and has four slots which accept upto 256 Meg 168-pin DIMMS.  The
motherboard has room for two Slot 1 processors, and can accept upto 
Pentium III 850 Mhz (100 Mhz FSB).

Quick scan of market prices for stuff:
  256 Meg, 168 Pin, 100 Mhz, SDRAM, 3.3 V, ECC, Registered - $80-100 each
  CPU 850 Mhz Slot 1, Pentium III, 100 Mhz, $170
  CPU 800 Mhz Slot 1, Pentium III, 100 Mhz, $150

  Based on what I see this model of processor is very hard to find in the
retail channel and has probably been discontinued.  The memory is also 
slightly exotic at this point... (it used to sell for about $20 a DIMM)
and is more expensive that it needs to be.

  I think it could certainly use some more memory, and by modern standards 
the CPU is slow (but acceptable).  Unfortunately (for me) I think the
machine isn't actually used enough for club use to spend a bunch of
money upgrading it.

  In order to support the faster P-III processors at their native rate
a BIOS flash upgrade is required, if I'm not mistaken that upgrade will 
make the board not support the current P-II processor it has.  I may
want to check with Tyan tech support about the correct upgrade ordering,
because I gather that CPU voltage changes are controlled by the BIOS,
each revision has support for a particular range of processors, and I 
could imagine needing to step to some middle common ground version 
so that the processor(s) don't fry.
